Survodutide (10mg) — Quick Overview

What it is: A synthetic dual-agonist peptide targeting both GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. It’s an investigational drug (not yet broadly approved), developed by Boehringer Ingelheim/Zealand Pharma, currently in late-stage clinical trials.

Mechanism of action:

  • GLP-1 receptor agonism — same pathway as liraglutide/semaglutide: boosts glucose-dependent insulin release, suppresses glucagon, slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite

  • Glucagon receptor agonism — this is the distinguishing feature: glucagon normally raises blood sugar and increases energy expenditure by promoting fat breakdown (lipolysis) and increasing hepatic energy use

  • The combination is designed to drive weight loss through both reduced intake (GLP-1 effect) and increased energy expenditure (glucagon effect) — a “dual-engine” approach compared to GLP-1-only drugs

Evidence status: Actually quite strong for an investigational compound — Phase 2 trial data (published in NEJM, 2024) showed substantial weight loss in people with obesity, and it’s now progressing through Phase 3 trials for obesity and for MASH (metabolic dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis, formerly NAFLD/NASH).

Regulatory status:

  • Not yet FDA-approved — still in clinical trials as of the most recent data, meaning it isn’t legally available as a prescribed drug yet in most markets

  • Any “Survodutide 10mg” sold outside a clinical trial setting is coming from research-chemical/gray-market vendors, not a regulated pharmaceutical supply

  • Dosing, purity, and safety profile at the vendor level are unverified — trial dosing protocols use carefully controlled, titrated regimens under medical supervision, which is very different from a self-administered vial of unknown provenance
