Adipotide (FTPP) — Educational Overview

What it is:
Adipotide, also known as FTPP (fluorescein-tagged prohibitin peptide-1), is a synthetic peptide originally developed by researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center and studied in animal models. It’s not an approved pharmaceutical and has never completed clinical trials establishing safety or efficacy in humans.

Proposed mechanism:
Adipotide is designed to target the blood supply feeding white adipose (fat) tissue. It binds to a receptor (prohibitin) on blood vessels within fat tissue, triggering localized cell death that cuts off blood flow to fat cells, causing the tissue to shrink.

What the research showed:

• In obese mouse studies, Adipotide produced significant weight loss.

• In a follow-up study on obese rhesus monkeys (2011, published in Science Translational Medicine), animals lost roughly 25–40% of their excess body weight over a few weeks.

• However, researchers also observed side effects including dehydration and reversible kidney toxicity, and the drug’s action on blood vessels raised concerns about broader off-target effects, since the receptor it targets isn’t exclusive to fat tissue vasculature.

Current status:

• Adipotide has not been approved by the FDA or any regulatory body for human use.

• No large-scale human clinical trials have been completed to establish a safe dosing range or long-term effects in people.

• It’s often sold online as a “research chemical” labeled not for human consumption, which means quality, purity, and dosing are unregulated and unverified.

• Some individuals have reportedly used it off-label for weight loss, but there’s no clinical data supporting a safe or effective human protocol.
